Shen Nong Scholarship for 2023

Shen Nong Scholarship and Research Fund 

The Shen Nong Scholarship and Research Fund was established by the Wellspring Foundation to encourage and support the scholarship and research of students of Traditional Chinese Medicine at recognized colleges and universities across Canada and, in particular, at Kwantlen Polytechnic University at its sites in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver, British Columbia. The Fund is also intended to enable students, scholars and practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine to contribute to the community through scholarship and research. 

Professionals have a responsibility to enable the development of the next generations of  students in their fields and to contribute to the ongoing development of research informed knowledge. The singular purpose of the Shen Nong Scholarship and Research Fund is to advance scholarship and the practice of research conducted by students, scholars and practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Canada. The Fund does so through the support of activities that are consistent with the ethical standards and philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. 

The initial priority of the Shen Nong Scholarship and Research Fund is to support the studies of worthy applicants who are presently engaged in the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Canada. The Wellspring Foundation has allocated an amount of $30,000 for fiscal year 2023 to the Fund.

Criteria for Eligibility

Criteria for Eligibility

Applicants must  currently be attending  Kwantlen Polytechnic University as a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine according to the provincial regulations of the Canadian province in which they are studying.

Applications must be submitted by August 10th,  2023 and awards will be announced by September 15th, 2023.

The maximum award is $3000 per annum and the funds must be used expressly in support of the applicant’s continuing studies.

Up to three (3) awards will be granted to qualified students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Please note that this scholarship is not available to students in their graduating year at the time of application.

Application Guidelines for Funding

For full consideration, applications for funding applications must include each of the components listed below.

  • Cover Page: Includes only the name of the applicant, the institution they are currently attending and their student number 
  • Application Letter: This letter should be written by the applicant and address the following:
    1. A brief introduction including why you have taken up the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine
    2. Your aspirations as a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine – what you hope to accomplish as a practitioner
    3. How your character and ethical standards suit you to be a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine
    4. Your present and past contributions to community and society – volunteer work, participation in community etc.
    5. What is most important for you to improve about yourself and your skills and knowledge in your continuing studies.
  • Verification of Good Standing: The application must be accompanied by a letter from applicant’s institution indicating that they are in good standing. (Does not apply to Kwantlen Polytechnic University students).
  • Up to Date Transcript: Kwantlen Polytechnic University students may submit an informal transcript. All other applicants must submit official transcripts in a sealed envelope from the institution documenting your current studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Successful applicants will have a GPA of at least 3.75 and no grades less than 3.0 on the transcript.
  • Letters of Reference: Submit three (3) letters of reference. At least one of these letters should attest to your character.
  • Professional Association: Submit evidence of your student membership in a Traditional Chinese Medicine professional association or a statement of your plans to become a member in such an association.

Application Timelines:

  • Deadline for submission of application – August 10th, 2023
  • Review of applications – August 15th, 2023 – September 14th, 2023
  • Decision notification – September 15th, 2023.
  • Presentation of award – Date to be announced.

Criteria for Evaluation of Applications

  1. Completeness of the application letter in addressing the five (5) criteria listed above.
  2. Enthusiasm and ethical awareness as reflected in the application letter.
  3. Accomplishments, character and ethics as attested to the three (3) letters of reference.
  4. Academic performance as indicated in the transcript.
  5. Soundness of the plans to practice Traditional Chinese Medicine in Canada and awareness of the significance of registration, licensure and membership in professional organizations.
  6. Potential of the applicant to make an outstanding contribution to the development of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Canada.

Adjudication

Adjudication for the allocation of funds is a merit review process typical of all other Canadian foundations, universities and provincial and national granting councils.

Awards will be recommended for approval by a panel appointed by the Founder of the Wellspring Foundation and generally includes the Kwantlen Polytechnic Dean of Health plus a senior faculty member of the university’s program in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The panel includes at least one additional member whose academic qualifications enable them to participate in the adjudication process. Note that donors to Wellspring Foundation may not serve on the panel adjudicating awards.

Summer of Vancouver Musical Concert

Welcome to Wellspring Foundation’s Second Chinese Music Concert and Fundraiser on February 7, 2020 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm at UBC’s Roy Barnett Hall.

The mission of Wellspring Foundation is to support education and research in Traditional Chinese Medicine in Canada. The Foundation believes that Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of China’s most valuable contributions to humanity and the civilization of the world as well as an important pillar of Canadian multicultural society.

The Foundation’s current activities include:

  1. The development and support of the Shen Nong Scholarship Fund in conjunction with Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s ground breaking program in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
  2. Support of the Vancouver General Hospital Heart and Stroke Research Project.
  3. Support of the Green Technology Education Centre’s GreenShift initiative addressing community environmental health and well- being.
